Many visitors arrive in Wadi Rum with a rental car from Amman or Petra. You must follow strict vehicle rules once you reach the protected area. Driving in deep sand requires experience and a true 4x4 vehicle.

Can I drive a 2WD car into Wadi Rum?

No. Standard cars are strictly prohibited inside the protected desert area.

You must leave your regular rental car parked outside the reserve. Free parking is available at the Wadi Rum Visitor Center or 6 kilometers further at Wadi Rum Village. From there, you will transfer to a local Bedouin 4x4 for your tour or camp transfer.

Are 4x4 rentals allowed inside the reserve?

Yes, you can drive a 4WD into the reserve if you pay the vehicle entry permit.

Only proper four-wheel-drive vehicles are permitted past Wadi Rum Village. You must stop at the Visitor Center to register the vehicle. An additional fee applies for bringing a private or rental 4WD into the reserve.

How much is the Wadi Rum independent travel fee?

Entering with your own 4WD may cost an extra vehicle fee.

This fee is for the vehicle permit alone. You still need to pay the standard entrance fee of 5 JOD per person at the Visitor Center. The personal entrance fee is waived if you present a printed Jordan Pass.

Why should I park instead of driving in?

The deep desert sand is difficult to navigate and easy to get stuck in.

Even with a 4WD, driving in Wadi Rum requires specific sand-driving skills. There are no paved roads inside the reserve. Most visitors park their rental cars in the village and book a Bedouin-driven jeep tour. This saves the permit fee and prevents getting stuck.

Can you visit Wadi Rum without a tour guide?

Yes, independent travel is allowed if you have a permitted 4WD.

You are not required to hire a guide if you drive your own 4x4. However, the desert spans 74,000 hectares with few marked tracks. Finding sites like Khazali Canyon or Um Fruth Rock Bridge can be challenging without local knowledge.

Where do I register my rental car?

All visitors must stop and register at the Wadi Rum Visitor Center.

The drive takes roughly 4 hours from Amman or 1.5 hours from Petra. Stay on the official road to the Visitor Center. Do not fall for scams from people trying to stop you on the highway before you reach the official gates.
